CHICAGO, Ill. – Murray State baseball dropped the middle game of its three-game series at UIC, marking a second straight Missouri Valley Conference series loss for the Racers after a dominant 7-0 start to the league schedule.
UIC (11-20-1, 6-5 MVC) used solo home runs in each of the first two innings to take an early lead they would never surrender. UIC broke the game open in the fifth inning, plating five runs on a grand slam to extend the margin.
Jacob Hustedde was tagged with the loss after surrendering seven of the eight Flames runs in 3.2 innings of work. This marked the second consecutive outing in which Hustedde was charged with seven earned runs.
Murray State (21-14, 7-4 MVC) was held without a hit through the first 4.2 innings until Daylan Pena and Connor Chisolm reached on back-to-back singles. However, the pair was left stranded to end the threat.
Murray State got on the board in the sixth inning when Anthony Perritano scored as Luke Mistone hit into a double play. The Racers added their final run on a solo home run to left by Kainen Jorge, his sixth long ball of the season.
The Racers and Flames conclude their series tomorrow at Curtis Granderson Stadium. The series finale is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
