The Murray State Racers carry the nation's second-longest winning streak into the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky., for the final game of a three-game home stand. MSU hosts the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri State in a clash of regional rivals and two of the top teams in the Ohio Valley Conference West Division.
The Racers (19-4, 9-0) have won 17 straight including a pair of home games last week over Eastern Kentucky and UT Martin. The Redhawks (10-12, 4-5 OVC) split games with a loss at home to SIUE and a win at Austin Peay. MSU's win streak is the second-best current streak in the country tied with Stephen F. Austin and behind only Kentucky at 21-0. MSU's recent success also triggered two votes for the team this week in the Associated Press Top-25. MSU moved up one spot to No. 5 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25.
The last time these two tangled, it was a thrilling double overtime affair in Cape Girardeau, Mo., where the Redhawks kept the Racers from a share of the OVC championship with a 114-110 win.
The Racers are led by All-America candidate Cameron Payne who became the 41st Racer to reach 1,000 points in the UTM game. Payne is on of the watch list for both the Bob Cousy award for the nation's top point guard and the Lou Henson Award for the top mid-major player. He was the OVC's Preseason MVP.
Coach Steve Prohm is on the doorstep of 100 career wins and his fourth-straight 20-win season. This would be a first for a MSU coach. The Racers are close to extending their 20-win season streak to six. Â MSU has never had five straight 20-win seasons, much less than the six they would have with another win.
The Racers have clinched their 28th straight winning season. The Racers came into the season trailing only Syracuse, Kansas and Arizona in this stat. MSU's remarkable run of winning seasons has been accomplished by seven different coaches since 1987.
The Racers have a split week in the OVC. After hosting SEMO Thursday, they travel to face Austin Peay (Feb. 7) in Clarksville, Tenn. MSU also sports the nation's longest road win streak at seven. MSU is tied for the top with Virginia, Rider and SFA.
MSU has won 10 straight home games since losing the season opener (Nov. 14) to Houston.
