A trip to the National Invitation Tournament semifinals will be on the Wednesday when the Murray State Racers travel to Norfolk, Virginia to tangle with the Old Dominion Monarchs. The 6 p.m. Central Time tip can be seen on ESPN2 from the Ted Constant Center. The winner of the game will advance to the NIT semifinals (March 31) at Madison Square Garden in New York City. All Murray State games are heard over free radio on WFGE Froggy 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Neal Bradley is in his 24th season as the Voice of the Racers. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides analysis.Â
The game is a match up of one team, the Racers, who had won 12 straight road games and the Monarchs who have won 23 straight on their home floor. MSU has won eight straight postseason games.
The Racers have scored their first wins in the NIT since 1980 with a home win over UTEP and an 83-62 victory Monday at Tulsa. The Racers hit 14 3-point baskets in the game, only three off the 1994 school record.
The Racers are a No. 3 seed and ODU (26-7) is the No. 1 seed in the lower portion of the bracket. The winner this game gets the winner of No. 5 Vanderbilt (21-13) and No. 2 Stanford (21-13). Those two play at Stanford Tuesday March 24 at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
MSU's first NIT game (March 17) was an 81-66 home win over UTEP, which ended up being the Racers' final home game of the season. They finished the season winners of 15 straight at home.
The Racers have effectively refocused their efforts on the NIT after they saw the nation's second-longest winning streak end (March 7) in the OVC Tournament championship to Belmont. MSU's 25-game run included an undefeated in December, January and February as MSU went 16-0 in league play. MSU made a sure case for being included in the NCAA Tournament, but gladly accepted a spot in the NIT as regular season champions of the OVC.
MSU has won 11 straight road games since a loss (Nov. 24) at Xavier. MSU set the school record of 16 in a row that spanned the entire 2011-12 season and some of 2012-13.
