After losing twice on Sunday, the Murray State softball team responded Monday with 4-0 win over Eastern Illinois at Williams Field in Charleston. With six strikeouts on the afternoon, CheyAnne Gaskey became the school's all-time strikeout queen, surpassing Shelby Kosmecki's previous record of 425 strikeouts, and now has 426 for her career.
Murray State (18-12, 5-5) was first to score in the contest when Erica Howard singled to lead off the third and was later brought home on a RBI-single from Jessica Twaddle. In the next at bat, Jocelynn Rodgers scored Mo Ramsey, who reached on a fielder's choice, on a sacrifice fly to give Murray State the 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Twaddle drove in her second run of the day on a double that allowed Ramsey to cross the plate. In the seventh, Alexa Becker started off the inning with her fourth double in as many games and was brought home later in the inning on a RBI ground-out from Rodgers to increase the lead to 4-0.
Gaskey picked up the eighth shutout of her career going the full seven innings allowing no runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Twaddle was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate on the day, while Ramsey scored two of MSU's four runs on the day.
The Racers will not play a mid-week contest this week and now turn their attention to the early weekend due to the Easter holiday. On Friday, the Racers will host Morehead State in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a pair of games on Saturday with Eastern Kentucky, also at 1 p.m.
