Murray State men's basketball coach Steve Prohm announced the signing of Bryce Jones and A.J. Patty.
Both student-athletes will be juniors with the Racers in the fall.
Jones is a 6-0 guard from Brooklyn, New York and played the last two seasons at Jones County Junior College in Mississippi. Patty is a 6-8 forward from Westchester, Illinois and played two seasons at Vincennes Junior College in Indiana.
"Bryce and A.J. have extensive experience in winning," Prohm said. "Bryce won a national championship as a freshman and A.J. played in the national tournament both years at Vincennes. These young men are used to winning and know what it takes. They'll be welcome additions in our program that has a culture of winning championships."
Bryce Jones – 6-0 – G – Jones County JC – Brooklyn, N.Y.
Jones was an All-Region 22 pick in the 2014-15 season for the Bobcats and led his team in scoring with 19.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game.
He was a 45 percent shooter from the field and 38 percent from the 3-point line. From the free throw line, Jones shot 79 percent in 173 attempts. He scored in double-figures in all 23 games and had nine games of 20 or more points. Jones had a double-double with 17 points and 12 assists on Jan. 6 against Itawamba.
Jones was named MVP of the Mississippi Junior College All-Star game (April 11) when he scored a game-high 28 points to lead the south team to a 123-117 win over the North.
As a freshman in the 2013-14 season, Bryce Jones was part of Jones County's NJCAA National Championship team that finished 28-5.
"When we knew there was a possibility of losing Cameron Payne to the NBA, we wanted to find an experienced point guard that could step in and keep this program at a high level," Prohm said. "Bryce has been a winner his entire life. His toughness and leadership will help us. We're looking forward to getting Bryce on campus in June."
"Bryce just wants to win," said Jones County Head Coach Rahim Lockhart. "He's a humble person and he's thankful for what he has. He's the kind of kid you want in your program. He's a talented floor general and I'd say his ball handling ability is his best attribute on the floor. He doesn't turn it over a lot and he's got a knack of making big shots."
Jones played at Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn, N.Y.
A.J. Patty – 6-9 – F – Vincennes JC - Westchester, Ill.
Patty was part of an outstanding team from Vincennes that started the 2014-15 season 32-0 and competed in the NJCAA National Tournament.
Patty led the Trailblazers with 7.6 rebounds per game to go with a 12.9 scoring average. He was a 51 percent shooter from the floor including 38 percent from the 3-point line in 29 attempts. He shot 76 percent from the free throw line in 144 attempts. With six games of 20 or more points, Patty's season-high was 27 points against Cochise in the national tournament. In his two seasons at Vincennes, Patty was part of a program that made two NJCAA National Tournament appearances and went 67-5.
"Coming from Vincennes, A.J. has been part of a program that has sustained a high level of excellence over the years," Prohm said. "A.J. has great length and is very versatile. He has an ability to score around the basket and can step out. He will bring experience to our front court after the graduation losses of Jarvis Williams and Jonathan Fairell."
"A.J. is a quality kid, comes from a solid family and is good in the classroom," said Vincennes Head Coach Todd Franklin. "He's long and has good hands. His best work is done around the basket. He's gotten quite a bit stronger with us and I think he will only get stronger as he fills out. A.J. liked the program at Murray State. He liked the team and the coaches and he was very comfortable there."
Patty played high school basketball at St. Joseph High School in Westchester, Illinois.
The latest MSU signees only add to what was already a talented group. Damarcus Croaker and Gee McGhee were with the Racers last season sitting out as transfers from Texas and Chattanooga.
