4/17/2015 1:26:00 PM | Women's Tennis
With the regular season behind them, the Murray State women's tennis team looks to claim their eighth Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship. The OVC Tournament will take place at the Centennial Sportsplex Tennis Center in Nashville, Tennessee. The Racers will face No. 5 Eastern Illinois on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Having nabbed the OVC regular season championship, the Racers earned the No. 1 seed and with that a bye into the semifinals.
MSU enters the tournament boasting two of all-conference members Andrea Eskauriatza and Eleonore Tchakarova, along with Nancy Karaky as the OVC Freshman of the Year. Eskauriatza earned All-OVC First Team honors, while E. Tchakarova earned All-OVC Second Team Honors. Karaky is the first Racer to garner an OVC Freshman of the Year award since it has been given out starting in 2005.
Three Racers enter the tournament undefeated in conference play. Eskauriatza went 7-0 during conference play, all in the No. 1 position. Alena Vasileva and Erin Patton enter with 8-0 records against conference opponents.
Patton took on an even bigger feat this season when she went 17-0. She earned all of her wins in the No. 3-6 position. This is only the fourth time in Murray State history a Racer has gone undefeated with the last one coming in the 1967-68 season when Martie Bastin went 10-0.Â
E. Tchakarova and Verginie Tchakarova went 10-4 in doubles play, while maintain an undefeated 6-0 record in the OVC.
Vasileva had two different doubles partners in both Meagan Blue and Nancy Karaky, those doubles teams went 3-0 and 2-0 in the conference, respectively.
The Racers are hoping to bring the championship trophy back to Murray, Kentucky.
Eastern Illinois is the only conference loss for the Racers as they fell 4-3 at the Rex Darling Courts in Charleston, Illinois during the regular season. MSU came out early and grabbed the doubles point, but that wasn't enough to put the Racers on top. Patton and Vasileva took wins on their respective courts, but that was not enough momentum to push the team to a win. Eastern Illinois took wins on courts one, two, three and five to take the win.Â
