City of Murray Honors Racer Basketball
4/23/2015 6:49:00 PM | Men's Basketball
The Murray State men's basketball team was honored Thursday (April 23), by the Murray City Council and Mayor Jack Rose.
The special day that included a proclamation from the council that honored the Racers and Head Coach Steve Prohm after another amazing season that saw the team claim the program's 28th straight winning season and 24th Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship. The Racers were upset in the finals of the OVC Tournament, but shook that off and advanced to the National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals. The Racers' season finished at 29-6 and along the way set the school and OVC record with a 25-game win streak. Their 16-0 mark in OVC play marked the first time in school history and the fifth in OVC history that a team went undefeated in league games.
The Racers' senior trio of Jonathan Fairell, T.J. Sapp and Jarvis Williams were in the spotlight as well. This trio helped the Racers to 52-17 mark in the last two seasons. MSU was an immovable force once the calendar turned to December. In the last two seasons from December 1st to the end of each season, they were a combined 47-8.
MSU was guided by terrific sophomore Cameron Payne, who was an honorable mention All-America by the Associated Press and was the OVC and Lute Olsen Player of the Year winner. Payne has since opted to make himself available for the NBA Draft in June.
Monday marks the annual celebration of Racer Basketball when the team holds its awards banquet at the CFSB Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. with dinner and the program starting at 6:30 p.m.
