Past Hoopalooza Celebrations
Murray State men's basketball coach Matt McMahon wants Racer fans to get ready for the third annual Racer Hoopalooza which will be held Aug. 7-8 in Murray, Ky.
The Racer Hoopalooza event has become an enjoyable reunion for former Racer coaches, players, managers, athletic trainers and of course, fans of the greatest tradition in the Ohio Valley Conference.
"We're excited about the third annual Racer Hoopalooza," McMahon said. "This is a big weekend when we can get together and celebrate Racer Basketball. I encourage everyone to save the dates of August 7th and 8th to be with us for this fun event."
Racer HoopaLooza will feature a social and banquet Friday, August. 7 at the CFSB Center. Saturday, August 8 will feature a golf scramble at Miller Memorial Golf Course and pick-up games at the CFSB Center (Aug. 8).
Racer Greats Coach Scott Edgar and Marcus Brown will be the featured guest speakers.
Edgar and Brown follow past Hoopalooza honorees Coach Mark Gottfried (2013) and Coach Cal Luther & his 1964 NCAA team (2014).
Arriving at Murray State in 1991, Coach Edgar led the Racers to three OVC regular season championships and two OVC Tournament titles. Those tournament championships led to two NCAA Tournament appearances. The Racers also played once in the NIT under Coach Edgar. From 1991-95, Edgar's teams played an up-tempo style and won 79 games. They made Racer Arena a tough place to play and had a 42-9 record there. In addition, the Racers were 48-9 in OVC games. Edgar is currently the head coach at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton, Oklahoma.
Marcus Brown, out of West Memphis, Arkansas, played for the Racers from 1992-96 and today is still the third all-time scorer at MSU with 2,236 points and 10th in scoring average at 18.9. His 767 points in 1995-96 is second all-time at MSU. He is second at MSU with 585 made free throws and first in free throw percentage at .849. Brown was named All-OVC three times and twice OVC Player of the Year. Brown holds the MSU single-game scoring record with 45 points in 1995 against Washington (Mo.). He was inducted into the MSU Hall of Fame in 2010 and his jersey No. 5 was retired. Brown was drafted by the Portland Trailblazers of the NBA in 1996 and enjoyed a long career playing for several teams in the Euro League.
