Oh So Close! MSU Falls Short Of Third Straight Win

The Murray State women's golf team came up just short of their quest to win three-straight events. The Racers finished second, one shot behind host Southern Mississippi on Tuesday at the Golden Eagle Jam at Hattiesburg Country Club in Hattiesburg, Miss.
MSU entered the final 18 holes two shots off the lead of Central Arkansas. While the Racers managed to pass UCA with a score of 294 (UCA had a 304), they were passed by a USM team that fired a 289 in the final round to nip the Racers at the wire with a total 880 to 881.
The Racers ended the event just shy of winning three tournaments in a row for head coach Velvet Milkman after winning in Alabama and Missouri in the last two weeks.
"We had a great effort today but we came up just short, Southern Miss played a little better than we did today," said Milkman. "That's how you win team championships is depth throughout the lineup. Everybody is playing well, but today it wasn't quite enough."
The Racers placed three players in the top-10 including Moa Folke with a third place showing with scores of 75-69-74=218. Linette Holmslykke (76-72-74=222) and Lucila Puente Rodriguez de Austria (72-77-73=222) shared seventh place. MSU's Sydney Kelley placed 12th (73-79-73=225) and Anna Moore placed 35th (83-73-82=238).
Raeysha Surendran played the event for Murray State as an individual and was third in the field of 10 solo players (31st overall) after scores of 81-75-80=236.
Hattiesburg Country Club played 6,228 yards and to a par-72.
With a pair of victories and runner-up finishes this fall, the Racers have one more event before they take the winter break and come back in the spring. The Racers compete (Oct. 17-18) at the Memphis Invitational. The 54-hole event will be played at Ridgeway Country Club in Germantown, Tennessee.
