10/30/2016 8:51:00 PM | Rifle
The Murray State rifle team set a new NCAA smallbore record Sunday in wins over the UT martin mixed and women's team at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray, Kentucky. The Racers shot a 2353 in the event eclipsing the previous mark of 2352 set by West Virginia.
"It was a really special day," said head coach Alan Lollar. "We have really had a good stretch of training and today we stepped up and shot well as a team."
"Ivan and Kenzie were the solid and consistent performers they have been all year, while Barbara had a fine smallbore day," continued Lollar, commenting on the individual performances. "Ben was back in form and showed why he is a great shooter. Bobby had the breakout day that we have known was coming for a while and did a great job today in both smallbore and air rifle. I can't say enough about his hard work and now it's time to become consistent at the high level he has reached. Meike also had another good day, she has trained well and has started to find the consistency we need. Alathea was solid in air and her smallbore is coming on, while Shelby had a good day and continues to train well. Eric had some really good strings and is working on some things that are beginning to show."
MSU rounded out its day with a 2365 in air rifle to finish with a 4718 aggregate score, just one point shy of the program record. The 4718 total score was more than enough to defeat the Skyhawk mixed team, which shot a 4605, and the women's team, which finished with a 4568.
Ivan Roe set new program individual marks in smallbore and aggregate Sunday with a 592 and an 1186, respectively. His 594 in air rifle was just one off his personal best and two away from the school record.
Robert Broadstreet set a new career mark in smallbore at 590 and was just one off his career high in air rifle at 590 to end the day at 1180, which was also a new personal best. MacKenzie Martin followed Broadstreet with a 584 smallbore and a 592 air rifle for an 1176 aggregate.
Ben Estes used a 586 smallbore and a 589 air rifle for a total of 1175, while Barbara Schläpfer fired a 585 and a 582 to end her day at 1167, rounding out Murray State's squaded shooters.
Meike Drewell continued to improve with a 587 smallbore and a 592 air rifle to lead the non-squaded shooters at 1179. Alathea Sellars also had a big day, shooting her best match of the year at 1167 with a 575 smallbore and a 592 air rifle. Shelby Huber also shot his best match of the year with career-highs of 578 in smallbore, 585 in air rifle and 1163 in aggregate. Eric Sloan shot a 563 in smallbore and a 478 in air rifle to end the match at 1041.
"This was a good match to start a big three week road swing for us," said Lollar summing up the day." "We approach the season in sections and this is the beginning of the second part of our season. It was a good start, but it's only the start. Tomorrow we go back to work trying to find a way to get more consistent at a level that allows us to compete with the best. The journey has just begun."
The Racers will now hit the road for three consecutive matches to wrap up the 2016 portion of their schedule. MSU will begin its road swing with a November 5 dual match at Morehead State, followed by a trip to The Ohio State University, the site of the 2017 NCAA Championships, on November 12 for the 2016 Buckeye Open. On November 19, the Racers will take the line for the final time before an extended holiday break at Jacksonville State's 2016 Gamecock Open.
