11/5/2016 10:45:00 PM | Rifle
It was another day and another broken record for the second-ranked Murray State rifle team as it set a new school air rifle record en route to a 4700-4603 victory over No. 17 Morehead State Saturday at the Button Rifle Range in Morehead, Kentucky.
Murray State shot a 2322 in smallbore and a school-record 2378 in air rifle for its second straight 4700-plus performance. Alathea Sellars led Murray State in air rifle with a 597, breaking the previous record of 596 set by Kaitlin Clever in 2010. Â
"The team showed a lot of toughness today," said head coach Alan Lollar. "They fought for every point and I am very proud of the team effort. Alathea was a spark today, she got us going with a great air rifle effort that really shows what she's capable of."
Ivan Roe and MacKenzie Martin followed Sellars on the gun at 595 and 594, respectively, while Robert Broadstreet and Meike Drewell rounded out MSU's squaded shooters at 592 and 586. Ben Estes and Barbara Schläpfer also shot in the event on Saturday and turned in a 589 and 584.
In smallbore, Roe led the way at 588 with Estes shooting a 581 and Martin firing a 580. Other squaded shooters in smallbore were Schläpfer, who shot at 573, and Broadstreet, who shot a 571. Sellars shot a 579 on the gun and Drewell fired a 577 to round out MSU's day.
Ivan Roe led all shooters in aggregate score with an 1183, while Sellars set a personal best at 1176.
The Racers will return to action next Saturday in Columbus, Ohio for the 2016 Buckeye Open hosted by The Ohio State University.
