The third-ranked Murray State rifle team claimed the title of the 2016 Ole Miss Open by firing a team score of 4690 Friday at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford, Mississippi. The Racers turned in a 2326 in smallbore and a 2364 in air rifle en route to their second win of the season.
MSU had to wait until Sunday to find out that its score was the tops out of the six other teams that competed in the event over the span of two weekends. The Racers beat out No. 4 Kentucky by 10 points, as the Wildcats shot a 4680 to finish in second, while No. 10 Memphis came in third with a 4649.
"Thank you to Ole Miss, Coach Beasley and Coach Black on running a good match," said head coach Alan Lollar Sunday, following news of his team's win. "We know and appreciate the work that has to go into putting on a match like that. I always enjoy this match, as it brings first class competition and a chance to challenge and evaluate our progress. Now, it's time for us to get back to work and get ready to host TCU and Jacksonville State."
Junior Ivan Roe tied his career best in smallbore at 591 and shot a team-high 592 in air rifle to lead Murray State on the day at 1183. Sophomore MacKenzie Martin tied Roe's 592 in air rifle and paired it with a 576 in smallbore to finish with an 1168 aggregate.
Freshman Meike Drewell posted MSU's second-highest aggregate at the event with an 1169 after firing a 582 in smallbore and a 587 in air rifle, while junior Ben Estes was also solid using a 577 smallbore and a 591 air rifle for an 1168 aggregate. Robert Broadstreet rounded out the squaded shooters for the Racers by a tallying a 571 in smallbore, to go along with a career-best 589 in air rifle for an 1160 aggregate.
Freshman Shelby Huber used a 566 in smallbore and a 578 in air file to get an aggregate of 1144, while Eric Sloan shot a 551 in smallbore and a 577 in air rifle to finish the match at 1128.
"I thought it was a good team day," siad Lollar after his team shot on Friday. "Meike really stepped, while Bobby had a good day on the air rifle. Ivan was once again solid on both guns and I really like the way Kezie shot in air rifle. Shelby and Eric are both working hard and making some gains that will start to show soon. Ben also worked hard in air rifle and finished with a solid score."
Murray State's next action will come at home on October 22 when it welcomes top-ranked TCU and 12th-ranked OVC foe Jacksonville State to the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range. The match is currently scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Â
