The fifth-ranked Murray State rifle team shot a 4696 to split a home tri-match with No. 14 Jacksonville State and top-ranked TCU Saturday at Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray, Kentucky. Jacksonville State shot a 4649 in the match to finish third in the three-team format, while the Horned Frog picked up a pair of wins by shooting a season-high 4720.
The Racers shot a 2327 in smallbore Saturday and a season-high 2369 in air rifle to finish just one point off their season-high aggregate at 4696.
"It's always good to be able to line up against the best," said Murray State head coach Alan Lollar. "We went in to this match with one goal, to continue to learn how to compete at our best when our best is needed. It is hard to recreate that feeling in training, so today, for us, was a good day."
"TCU is really on a roll right now," continued Lollar. "They were very impressive today. They put together a great performance and we congratulate them on a fine match."
"I was pleased with several things today," Lollar said, commenting on his team's individual performance. "Meike Drewell stepped up and showed that she is ready to contribute. Bobby was really good today. He has started to put it all together by working hard and it is good to see that pay off. Ivan and Kenzie were consistent and performed at the level they train and that is always our goal. Alathea was good in smallbore, she is improving every week and will soon be real two-gun threat. Her air rifle was right where it should be at this time of the year. Shelby and Eric had good days in smallbore, both showed toughness. Barbara got her first match out of the way and really worked hard in air rifle today. Ben had a good day in both guns, his air rifle is starting to come on."
"As a team, we shot a little higher than our match average, but we have some work to do," Lollar concluded. "If we can smooth out some rough spots, we will have a chance to grow into our potential. We will go to work next week and get ready to host UTM next Sunday."
MacKenzie Martin and Ivan Roe shot a team-high 583 to lead the squaded Racers in smallbore, while Bobby Broadstreet and Meike Drewell followed at 581 and 580, respectively. Barbara Schläpfer rounded out the squaded shooters for MSU on the day at 578. Amongst non-squaded shooters, Ben Estes tied Martin and Roe at 583, while Alathea Sellars shot a 575, Shelby Huber shot a 574 and Eric Sloan shot a 571.
In air rifle, Roe tied his career high at 595 to lead Murray State, while Martin turned in a 592, Sellars and Broadstreet each shot a 591 and Schläpfer was the last squaded shooter for MSU at 590. Drewell led the non-squaded shooters for the Racers at 593 Saturday, while Estes followed at 590. Huber followed his career-best smallbore performance with a career-high 578 in air rifle with Sloan rounding out MSU's day at 552.
Murray State returns to action next Sunday, October 30, against the UT Martin mixed and women's teams at 9 a.m. at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range.
