For the second time in as many matches, the Murray State school record in air rifle fell, this time with a 2379. The Racers paired their air rifle score with a 2334 in smallbore to win the five team Buckeye Open, hosted by Ohio State, with an aggregate score of 4713 Saturday at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range in Columbus, Ohio.
"I'm really proud of the team effort for third straight week," said head coach Alan Lollar. "We are now showing signs of the consistency we need. Barbara had a nice smallbore day, along with Kenzie, they led the way. It was a great day for both of them. Then in air rifle, everyone showed up today, Ben, Kenzie, Ivan and Alathea, all of them really did a great job. It was a solid team effort today, everyone contributed, it was an amazing effort for the third consecutive week.
MacKenzie Martin shot a 584 smallbore and a 595 air rifle to finish with a career-high 1179 aggregate score. Martin score was third in each individual discipline, however her total score was the second-highest of the day, out of 55 shooters.
Barbara Schläpfer led Murray State in smallbore in the match at 587 and finished the day at 1172, after firing a 585 in air rifle. Meanwhile, Ben Estes led the team in air rifle with a career best 596, to go along with a 580 in smallbore for a total of 1176, which was also a personal record.
Ivan Roe used a 581 smallbore and a 594 air rifle to end his day at 1175, while Robert Broadstreet finished at 1169 after a 582 in smallbore and a 587 in air rifle. Meike Drewell and Alathea Sellars each only shot one discipline with Drewell posting a 574 in smallbore and Sellars firing a 594 in air rifle.
MSU's 4713 total Saturday was its second highest aggregate score of the season and marked the third consecutive match in which it shot 4700 or better. Next Saturday, the Racers will shoot their last match before taking a break for the holidays when they travel to Jacksonville, Alabama for the 2016 Gamecock Open hosted by Jacksonville State.
