The Murray State rifle team set a new school record for aggregate score, while Ivan Roe set new program individual marks in smallbore and aggregate Saturday at the 2016 Gamecock Open hosted by Jacksonville State at the Gamecock Rifle Range in Jacksonville, Alabama. The Racers shot a 2348 in smallbore and a 2372 in air rifle for a new program high aggregate of 4720, marking the team's fourth straight 4700-plus point performance.
"I am really proud of the effort over the last four weeks," said head coach Alan Lollar. "Four weeks and four team records is outstanding. We have raised our standard of performance and maintained consistency. We only compete against our best and we have some competitors. I am just really proud of the whole team. Now we will take a break and Ivan, Bobby, Meike, Alathea and Kenzie will compete at the Winter Air Championships in two weeks. Our team deserves a break, but we still have a lot more work to do."
Ivan Roe shot a new school record of 594 in smallbore and paired it with a 594 in air rifle to set another school record for aggregate score at 1188. Ben Estes also shot a career high in aggregate at 1177, after shooting 584 in smallbore and a 593 in air rifle.
MacKenzie Martin turned in an 1178 Saturday using a 584 in smallbore and a 594 in air rifle, while Alathea Sellars shot a career-best 590 in smallbore and 1177 in aggregate to go along with a 587 in air rifle.
Barbara Schläpfer used a 586 in smallbore and a season-high 591 in air rifle for a season-best 1177 aggregate in the match, while Meike Drewell and Robert Broadstreet shot an 1162 and 1163, respectively. Drewell shot a 576 in smallbore and a 586 in air rifle, with Broadstreet firing a 572 and 591.
"Ivan had a career day, setting new individual smallbore and aggregate records," continued Lollar. "He had really solid sling today. Alathea is making a move in both guns and really showing her value, while Ben was solid in smallbore and came back strong after slow start in air rifle. Barbara has been training well and had a good day. Kenzie was consistent and had a good day in both guns, we needed her today and she came up big. Bobby struggled some in smallbore, but came back with a fine air rifle performance. He's turning into a real competitor. Meike did some good things, as well, and continues to train and compete well, she is close to breaking out in a big way."
The Racers will now take a break for the holidays before returning to action January 14 against Ole Miss and Kentucky in Oxford, Mississippi.
