All-Time vs. AAMU: MSU leads 7-2
Last Meeting: MSU 76, AAMU 59 – Nov. 11, 2015 at Huntsville, Ala.
After opening the 2016-17 season with a 101-59 victory over Eureka College Nov. 11 at the CFSB Center, the Murray State women's basketball team returns home for a 6 p.m. contest against Alabama A&M. The Racers look to secure their third straight victory against the Bulldogs and push their home record against AAMU to 5-0.
In the victory over the Red Devils last week, Ke'Shunan James led MSU with a game-high 25 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the field and also added seven rebounds, four assists and four steals in the win. James now sits just 16 points shy of becoming the 19th member of the 1,000-point club in program history. James would become the first student-athlete to join the exclusive club since Mariah Robinson reached the milestone late in the 2011-12 season.
Abria Gulledge added a career-high 23 points in the win over Eureka on Friday. It was the first 20-point outing of Gulledge's career and breaks her previous career-high of 19 points against UT Martin last season. Bria Bethea also had a career night in the win over Eureka as she added 12 points while LeAsia Wright and Katie Mackenzie chipped in with 16 and 10 points, respectively. The Racers shot 48 percent from the field in the win while holding the Red Devils to 33 percent overall.
Last year against the Bulldogs, MSU went on the road and defeated AAMU 76-59 in Huntsville, Ala. James led the way with 29 points in the win while Wright added 17. Jasmine Borders scored nine and hit three consecutive 3-pointers to help push the Racers past the Bulldogs in the second half. Kyra Gulledge posted a game-high 11 rebounds on the day.
With the season-opening win, the Racers are now 22-28 all-time in season openers and are 26-24 in home openers. MSU also improves its record to 14-10 in season openers that are played at home. Under coach Cross, the Racers are now 7-2 in both season and home openers.
The Bulldogs opened their season last Friday with a 96-32 loss at Western Kentucky. AAMU was led in the contest by Jameica Cobb's 10 points while Hillary Williams added eight. For the game, the Bulldogs shot just 25 percent from the floor and went 2-of-10 from 3-point range. Shakira Logan led the squad with six rebounds in the loss. Ebony Johnson, who scored 12 points in last season's meeting with the Racers had two points against the Hilltoppers. The Bulldogs are led by first-year head coach Margaret Richards, who spent the 2015-16 season as an assistant at Clemson.
