The Murray State women's basketball team picked up a solid 81-70 victory over UNCG Sunday afternoon at the CFSB Center. The win pushes the Racers' record to 3-1 on the season. MSU was led by Ke'Shunan James' 24 points, 15 rebounds and six assists in the win.
The 15 boards from James is a career-high from her and also gives MSU its first double-double of the season. James shot 10-of-15 from the field in the win. Jasmine Borders tallied a career-high 17 points and five made 3-pointers on the afternoon while Bria Bethea chipped in with 12 off the bench and LeAsia Wright added 11 points.
The Racers led in the contest for all but the first two and a half minutes of the ballgame. After opening the game with back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers, MSU led by 10, 23-13 at the end of the first period and took a 43-34 advantage into halftime.
In the second half, the Racers lengthened their lead to as many as 24 points, 70-46 with 8:54 left to play in the game. However, the Spartans (2-2) made things interesting as they went on a 21-3 run later in the quarter and cut the MSU margin down to just 73-68 with 1:50 left to play. Back-to-back buckets by Wright and James pushed the lead back up to 77-68 and four consecutive made free throws from Wright salted the game away for the Racers.
MSU was deadly at the stripe in the win as the Racers went 16-for-19 at the line. The Racers also did damage from beyond the arc, hitting a season-best 11 3-pointers in the win.
The Racers out-rebounded UNCG by 10 in the contest and although both teams recorded 15 offensive boards, the Racers held a 20-10 advantage in second-chance points on the day. UNCG held slight edges in points in the paint (30-26), points off turnovers (17-14) and bench points (23-19).
For the game, MSU shot 27-for-68 from the floor (39.7 percent) and held the Spartans to 32.4 percent on 23-of-71 shooting. UNCG made six of its 17 3-point attempts in the game and also hit 18 free throws.
Tuesday night, the Racers return to action for their final contest before Thanksgiving as they host Lipscomb in a 7 p.m., contest at the CFSB Center.
