After a trip to Ohio last week, the Murray State Racers come home to the CFSB Center for the first time since opening night when they host the Alabama A&M Bulldogs Saturday at 7 p.m.Â
This stand-alone men's game will be aired live on free radio on WFGE 103.7FM with "Voice of the Racers" Neal Bradley, in his 26th season and former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth calling the action. Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com has free online streaming audio. The game will also be offered free on OVCDigitalNetwork.com with streaming video.
The Racers (2-3) lost 2-of-3 games last weekend at the Bill Frack Tournament hosted by Bowling Green State. MSU had a 50-point second half in route to a 93-77 win over Green Bay. The Racers stumbled in an 85-74 loss against UMKC in a game that was a one-point game with 8:11 remaining. MSU suffered a 78-77 loss to BGSU Monday where Jonathan Stark had a shot in the paint at the buzzer for the win.
The Racers had several bright spots from their bench in the three games including Gilbert Thomas who hit 10-of-12 shots from the field and grabbed 16 rebounds. Jachai Taylor hit 4-of-7 from long range and averaged 7.3 points per game. The Racers played everyone on the trip. MSU saw Thomas lead the bench in playing 19.7 minutes per game in the BGSU event.
The Racers are firing up 3-point shots like never before, as they've made double-digit threes in four of the first five games. They hit 12 of them against BGSU and Jonathan Stark was 4-of-7. The junior guard is first in the Ohio Valley Conference with 20 made threes and he ranks seventh among NCAA D-I players. The Racers are 15th in the nation with 53 made 3-pointers in the first five games of the season.
Stark has made a splash already this season by earning OVC Newcomer of the Week honors in the first two weeks. Stark led the Racers in scoring in all three of their games at Middle Tennessee and against Green Bay and UMKC. He averaged 20.3 points per game for the week and just missed a pair of double-doubles and averaged eight assists.
The tough non-conference gauntlet continues for the Racers Tuesday when they finish the first month of the season at Southern Illinois. Saturday (Dec. 3) finds the Racers back at the CFSB Center to host Detroit, before taking a week off for final exams, and heading out again for a road game at Evansville (Dec. 10).
Alabama A&M (0-4) is looking for their first win of the season after road losses at Missouri State (96-62), Missouri (99-44), Tennessee Tech (95-61) and Monday at Southern Mississippi (63-55). The Racers lead the all-time series with the Bulldogs 2-0 after wins at the CFSB Center in 2014 and 2015.
