This Week
The Racers will take their four-game win streak to the heart of Louisiana this weekend for a three-game series at Northwestern State, with a doubleheader Saturday and a single-game Sunday. Live video will be available for all three games for a fee with a single-day access costing $6.95 and a month pass, which would cover both days, listed at $10.95.
Previously On Racer Softball
The Racers went 2-0 in a shortened Holiday Inn Hilltopper Classic on the weekend with a 1-0, nine inning win over Missouri State and a 10-5 win over Austin Peay.
Mason Robinson gave a gritty, nine inning complete game performance in the win over the Bears, allowing no run on just three hits. After eight innings of scoreless play, the Racers finally broke through in the ninth with the international tie-breaker in effect. Shelbey Miller began the inning with a sacrifice to move the placed runner, Maggie Glass, who was brought home in the next at-bat on a sacrifice fly from Madison Culver.
In the second game, it was all Racers. Jocelynn Rodgers went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the game, while Jessica Twaddle was 1-for-3 with two walks, three runs and three stolen bases. Haven Campbell and Amber Van Duyse combined for 6.1 innings of scoreless softball in the game with Campbell allowing just three hits and Van Duyse giving up none.
All-Time vs. Northwestern State
Having met previously in 2012 at Mississippi State, the Racers and the Lady Demons will enter this weekend's series tied at one win each. The Racers won the first meeting that weekend, 5-4, giving head coach Kara Amundson her first collegiate win, however, the Lady Demons evened the series later in the weekend with a 3-2 victory.
Scouting Northwestern State
The Lady Demons will enter the weekend at 8-4, after going 2-3 at Baylor's Getterman Classic last week. NSU began the season by going 4-1 at Texas State's Centurylink Classic notching wins over DePaul and Oklahoma State.
Kellye Kincannon and Micaela Bouvier have led a potent Lady Demon offense this season that is hitting .311 as a team with batting averages of .450 and .444, respectively. Both players have a team-high four home runs, but Bouvier leads the way in RBIs with 16, while Kincannon has 12.
Bouvier also leads the way for NSU so far this season in the circle, where she is 5-1 with a 3.10 ERA and a team-high 24 strikeouts. One pitcher that will not be available for NSU this weekend is the reigning Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year, Mikayla Brown, who, it was announced this week, suffered a season-ending injury during opening weekend. Brown was already 2-0 on the season with a 0.55 ERA and was limiting opponents to a .143 average while striking out 11.
Weather Forecast
The state known as the Sportsman's Paradise will be a softball paradise this weekend in Natchitoches with a high of 69° F on Saturday and a high of 73° F on Sunday. With a less than 20% chance of rain on the weekend, the only troubling part of the forecast is the wind on Sunday. Sunday's winds will come out of the SSW at up to 12 mph, with gusts at up to17 mph.
Â
Repeat Offender
After only stealing eight bases in the first two seasons of her career, Jessica Twaddle continued her hot start on the base paths in 2016 and now has seven stolen bases this season. On Saturday against Austin Peay, she set a new career-high by coming up with three stolen bases on three attempts.
Leading The Way
With the double play against Missouri State on Saturday, the Racers still lead the nation in double plays per game at 1.00 along with Grambling and Indiana State.
History Repeating?
For the third straight season, the Racers have started the year at 4-2. If that is any indicator, then they will be in for a good season as they have won 30-plus games in each of the past two years.
Searching For Milestones
In a rare coincidence, both Murray State head coach Kara Amundson and Northwestern State head coach Donald Pickett will enter this weekend's series just one shy of a major career milestone. For Amundson, she enters the series with 99 career wins, looking for her 100th, while Pickett has 199 and will look to pick up his 200th against the Racers.
Up Next
Murray State will head to Auburn for the 2016 Wilson/DeMarini Classic on Friday and Saturday. On Thursday, the Racers will play a pre-classic game against the host Tigers.
