Dishing Out a Win - Racers Take Down APSU
2/6/2016 6:52:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The Murray State Racers scored a 75-72 victory over the Austin Peay Governors Saturday at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
Â
The Racers improved to 8-14 overall and 4-7 in the Ohio Valley Conference. MSU's OVC West Division foe APSU fell to 7-17 and 5-6.
Â
The key to the evening was sharing the ball which the Racers did 20 times as they notched their top-assist game this season against an NCAA D-I team. MSU assisted on 20 of their 29 field goals. LeAsia Wright had a team-high five assists.
Â
Ke'Shunan James led the way with 18 points, with 17 points coming from Abria Gulledge and 14 from LeAsia Wright. Kyra Gulledge grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Racers to a 39-32 lead on the boards.
Â
The Racers bolted out to a 12-0 lead to start the game and enjoyed a 24-13 advantage when the first quarter clock ended. The Racers hit 10-of-19 from the field in the opening quarter with Gulledge and Wright combining for six.
Â
MSU kept a good pace going on the offensive end in the second quarter when Gulledge hit a 25-foot 3-pointer that was followed by Ajee Smith who swiped a rebound from an APSU defender for an easy score. MSU led 35-19 with 6:05 before the half.
Â
The Racers led the Govs 48-30 at the halftime intermission.
Â
MSU pushed the lead to 55-30 when James scored on a floater in the lane 15-seconds into the third quarter.
Â
MSU was outscored in the third quarter 25-18, but still carried a healthy 66-55 lead into the final eight minutes.
Â
The Racers had some tense moments in the fourth quarter, but still managed to complete their eighth win of the season.
Â
The week ahead for the Racers calls for a trip to Edwardsville, Ill., Wednesday to face the SIUE Cougars and Saturday (Feb. 13), MSU hosts Southeast Missouri State at the CFSB Center.
