Racers In 3rd After NCAA Day 1
3/11/2016 3:39:00 PM | Rifle
The Murray State rifle team shot a 2329 in smallbore to finish day one of the 2016 NCAA Rifle Championship at the Stile Athletic Fieldhouse in Akron, Ohio in third place.
"Ivan did a great job today, said head coach Alan Lollar. "He has only trained for a couple of days since returning from Bangkok and was super focused today. Tessa, Kenzie and Ben were also very solid and we were very close to our season averages. That is what we expect to do; train well and compete the way we train. I am proud of all of them, it was great team effort.
Sophomore Ivan Roe led Murray State with a 586, while senior Tessa Howald, sophomore Ben Estes and freshman MacKenzie Martin all shot a 581 to round out the counted shooters. Freshman Barbara Schläpfer was also on the line for MSU on Friday and shot a 573.
Roe's 586 was the third highest individual total of the day and earned him a spot in the final. He went on to finish the final in eighth place.
After the smallbore event, West Virginia leads with a 2338, while TCU follows at 2333. Sitting just four point out of second and nine from first, the Racers are in a good position heading into tomorrow's air rifle finale.
Team relays for Saturday are scheduled for 10:15 and 12:45 ET, with the individual final to follow at 3:30 ET.
