Murray State went 1-4 on its spring break trip through the Commonwealth, which included a close loss at #15 Kentucky and three one-run defeats. A bad bottom of the sixth inning led to the Wildcat's victory in the trip opener, despite the Racers holding UK to just one run on only three hits through five innings. On Friday, the Racers fell twice to Eastern Kentucky in back-to-back one-run losses, including a 10-inning heartbreaker in the doubleheader finale.
In the doubleheader against Morehead State Saturday, the Racers began the day by using an eight-run fifth inning to take down the Eagles, 8-2. However, in the second game, MSU once again fell by a run, losing 3-2.
Shelbey Miller led the Racers by hitting .450 on the week with in each game including tallying three hits on two different occasions. Mason Robinson went 1-1 on the week and limited opponents to a miniscule .164 average by allowing just 11 hits in 71 batters faced.
All-Time vs. Memphis
Murray State will take on Memphis for the eighth time Tuesday in the fifth consecutive season for the series. After splitting a doubleheader in which both teams picked up their largest win of the series last season in Murray, the Tigers now lead the Racers, 5-2. The year's contest will also mark MSU's third trip to the Tiger Softball Complex where it is1-2 all-time, winning the last meeting there, 4-3, in 2014.
Scouting The Tigers
Memphis opened its American Athletic Conference slate last weekend at home by winning two of three against UConn to move to 18-17 on the year. The Tigers shutout the Huskies, 7-0, Friday, but were then blanked themselves Saturday, 6-0. Memphis picked up the series win Sunday, by edging UConn, 2-1.
Molly Smith got both wins for the Tigers on the week by allowing just one run on 10 hits with 19 strikeouts over two complete games. Smith currently leads the Memphis staff, which has a team ERA of 4.22 with a team low of 2.50. She will enter Tuesday at 6-6 overall with an opponent's average of .264 and 71 strikeouts compared to just 29 walks.
Offensively, Brittany Seale currently has a team-high average of .365 to lead Memphis, which bats .293 as a team. She has also driven a team-high 28 RBIs and has a .413 slugging percentage and a .430 on-base percentage.
Weather Forecast
With the game originally scheduled for Wednesday, the contest at Memphis was moved to Tuesday to avoid rain. However, Tuesday the sun will be shining with a high of 70° F. There will be just a one percent chance of rain Tuesday with moderate winds at about 8 m.p.h.
Another Streak Ends
In Friday's second game at EKU, Jessica Twaddle went 0-for-5, putting and end to her 24-game reached base streak. The streak will go down as the third longest in MSU history. Twaddle currently holds the record of 37 which she set from April 5, 2015 to March 15, 2015.
Keeping It Close
Murray State has played nine games this season which were decided by just one run. Unfortunately for the Racers, they have come up on the short end of the stick in seven of those contests.
Making It Last
Friday's game at Eastern Kentucky went 10 innings, tying the longest game in program history. The Racers have gone 10 innings now six times, losing five of those games. Stranger still, including Saturday's game, three of those contests ended with a score of 4-3.
Up Next
Murray State will begin a stretch of 16 home games over the next 20 contests this weekend with a three-game OVC set against Eastern Illinois. Both Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
