Murray State's Matt McMahon was named as a finalist for the 2016 Joe B. Hall award by CollegeInsider.com.
The Joe B. Hall Award is given annually to the top NCAA D-I rookie men's basketball head coach.
In his first season guiding the Murray State Racers, Coach McMahon led the team to an Ohio Valley Conference divisional title and a 17-14 overall record in the 2015-16 season. McMahon's rookie campaign secured the program's 29th consecutive winning season, the fourth-longest streak in the nation. The Racers are tied with UConn and behind only Syracuse (47), Kansas (33) and Arizona (32).
All of the awards that CollegeInsider.com gives annually will be handed out Monday (April 4) in Houston, site of the men's NCAA Final Four.
McMahon is joined on the finalist list by former Murray State assistant coach Linc Darner of Green Bay. The other finalists include: Chris Beard (Little Rock), Nathan Davis (Bucknell), Steve Forbes (East Tennessee State), Eran Ganot (Hawaii), Eric Konkol (Louisiana Tech), Matt McCall (Chattanooga), Nate Oats (Buffalo), Montez Robinson (Alcorn State).
Former Murray State coach Steve Prohm, now at Iowa State, was the first recipient of the Hall award after his 31-2 rookie season in 2011-12.
The award is named in the honor of University of Kentucky great Joe B. Hall who coached the Wildcats 1972 to 1985. He won 297 games and was SEC Coach of the Year four times. His 1978 team won the NCAA championship, making Hall one of only three to win an NCAA championship as a player (1949- Kentucky) and coach (1978- Kentucky). The only others to achieve this feat are Bob Knight and Dean Smith.
