Racers Take Two From Bruins

The Murray State softball team limited Belmont to just one run in Sunday's doubleheader to sweep the Bruins, 4-1 and 4-0, Sunday at Racer Field in Murray.
Shelbey Miller kicked off the day for Murray State (17-20, 7-7 OVC) in the second inning of the opener, when she blasted a home run over the center field wall that also scored Maddy Feeney, to make it 2-0, Racers.
In the fourth, Brenna Finck singled and Miller walked with one out to give Murray State a chance at increasing the lead. MSU would go on to do just that when Cayla Levins doubled to score Finck and Jocelynn Rodgers singled to score Miller, pushing the lead to 4-0.
Lexi Rouse helped get Belmont on the board in the sixth, when she doubled to left field. Her pinch runner, Sami Long, then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI groundout by Chelsey Deloney to cut the lead to 4-1. Three runs, however, would be as close as the Bruins would get, as the Racers held on for the 4-1 win.
Miller finished the game at 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs, a home run and a walk, while Feeney was also 2-for-3 with a run. In addition, Rodgers added two hits in the game to go along with one RBI. Mason Robinson (12-9) picked up the complete game win by allowing just one run on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
In game two, Rodgers and Levins once again drove in run for the Racers, only this time each would score two on a single shot. Rodgers did her damage in the first on a double, while Levins made it 4-0 in the second on a long single.
That would prove to be all the offense needed in the game, as Haven Campbell (5-6) took care of business in the circle by notching her second solo shutout of the season. She allowed no runs on five hits with no strikeouts and two walks over the full seven innings.
Brenna Finck led Murray State in the finale by going 3-for-3 with a double and a run, while Levins finished at 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Rodgers was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. Leah Kesel also played a key role by going 1-for-2 with a walk and scoring two of MSU's four runs in the contest.
Murray State returns to mid-week action Wednesday when it travels to Southern Illinois looking to avenge last week's loss to the Salukis. First pitch at Charlotte West Stadium in Carbondale is scheduled for 4 p.m.
