Racers Fall at SIU
4/13/2016 7:02:00 PM | Softball
The Murray State softball team fell to Southern Illinois, 2-0, Wednesday at Charlotte West Stadium in Carbondale.
After two scoreless innings, SIU finally got the scoring started in the bottom of the third on a dropped fly ball by the Racers with two outs allowing Sydney Jones to reach second. On the next play, a short throw to first went down as another error for MSU, allowing Jones to score in the process, to make it 1-0.
The Salukis padded their lead in the fifth after singles from Merri Ann Patterson and Savannah Fisher and a sacrifice bunt from Jessa Thomas put runners at the corners with one out. Patterson would go on to score to increase Murray State's deficit to 2-0 on a sacrifice fly by Kelsey Gonzalez. That two runs turned out to be all the offense needed by Southern Illinois, as the Salukis held on for the shutout win.
Shelbey Miller led MSU by going 2-for-3, while Maddy Feeney was 1-for-3 with a double. Mason Robinson fell to 12-10 on the year with the loss after giving up one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts and no walk. The Racers were not without their chances in the contest as they stranded six runners in the game, including a bases-loaded, no-outs situation in the third.
Murray State returns to Racer Field Saturday and Sunday for a three-game series with SIUE. First pitch for both Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single-game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
