The Murray State rifle team has received a NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Award for the 2014-15 academic year, the governing body announced Wednesday.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.Â
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in each sport. The APR awards two points each term to student-athletes who meet academic eligibility standards and who remain with the institution. A team's APR is the total points earned by the team at a given time divided by the total points possible, multiplied by 1,000. It includes four years (this year's numbers included the school years of 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 and 2014-15). High-performing teams receiving public recognition awards posted APR scores ranging from 983 to a perfect 1,000.
This marks the first award for rifle and head coach Alan Lollar. Rifle is now the seventh different team to earn the awards since it began in 2004-05. This also marks the sixth time in seven seasons that an MSU team has won the award.
"We are tremendously proud of our rifle team for this outstanding accomplishment," said Director of Athletics Allen Ward. "Coach Lollar continues to have great success on the field of competition, but this award proves he is successful in the classroom as well. He has truly embraced our 'Four Years. Two Goals' concept by ensuring we continue to produce high-quality student-athletes that will do great things beyond Murray State, thanks to their degree.
Senior Associate Athletics Director Matt Kelly echoed Ward's sentiments, "Alan is a long-time coach at Murray State that has a great understanding of what we try to accomplish as a department on a day-to-day basis. Over the years, he has consistently turned out student-athletes who are leaders on the range, in the classroom and in the community. We are extremely proud of Coach Lollar and his continued commitment to the student-athlete."

Conference-wide 26 teams from nine different institutions were honored this year. Those numbers are up from 2013-14 when 15 teams from eight schools were honored. The Racer rifle team was the only OVC rifle team to earn the award this season and just one of eight rifle teams nationwide to do so.
"This award is indicative of the commitment our program and Murray State University has to ensuring our student-athletes stay on track to graduate," said rifle head coach Alan Lollar. "At MSU, academics truly does come first and with the leadership of Allen Ward, Matt Kelly and their staff, our student-athletes have had tremendous academic success to go along with their successes on the range. This is the first such award the rifle program has received here at Murray State and it just shows the type of student-athletes we have been able to bring into the program on a consistent basis."
This year 1,071 teams (649 women's teams, 422 men's or mixed teams) were publicly recognized for high academic achievement. This year schools combined indoor and outdoor track and field teams into one team score, which slightly reduced the overall number of teams earning awards. In all, 290 Division I institutions placed at least one team on the list.
