Tuesday's Games
The Murray State softball team will play its final non-conference contests of the season Tueday at Racer Field when it hosts Western Kentucky in a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
Previously On Racer Softball
The Racers went 0-4 last weekend at home, but kept it close and fell by just a two-run margin in each contest. Tennessee Tech was forced to rally in each game to overcome the Racers, while MSU had a chance in the seventh inning in each game against JSU but could rally back. Jessica Twaddle was 8-for-13 for a .615 average over the four-game span and tallied at least one hit in each contest. Despite being out-scored on the weekend, 21-13, the Racers seemed to find their offensive groove and out their opponents, 38-35.
All-Time vs. Western Kentucky
Tuesday will be the ninth and 10th meetings all-time between the two teams and MSU will enter the contests looking to snap a six-game losing streak against the Lady Toppers. The Racers have only beaten Western Kentucky once in the eight-game series, a lone 7-0 victory in Murray in 2011.
Scouting The Lady Toppers
The Lady Toppers will enter Tuesday on a three-game skid after dropping a mid-week to Kentucky and a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at home to Samford. Offensively, the Lady Toppers are hitting .263 as a team this season, while opponents are hitting .281. In the circle, the WKU pitchers have a combined staff ERA of 4.28 and have fanned 202 batters compared to just 118 walks.
Brooke Holloway currently leads WKU at the dish this season with a .356 average and a team-high 24 RBIs and 27 walks, while Bryce Holmgren and Jordan Mauch follow at .324 and .314, respectively. For the Western Kentucky pitchers, Kathryn Downing currently boasts a team-low ERA of 2.92 and is 6-3 on the year, while Hannah Parker has a team-high 31 appearances this season and is 10-15 with a 4.13 ERA.
All-Time vs. Jacksonville State
After losing both regular-season games at Jacksonville State last year, but picking up a win over the Gamecocks in the OVC tournament, MSU enters Sunday at 11-8 all-time against Jax State. Murray State is 4-3 all-time against JSU in Murray, last sweeping a doubleheader between the two teams in 2014.
Weather Forecast
Despite being cloudy with the possibility of a thunderstorm, Tuesday should be fairly warm with a high of 82°F. As day turns to night, the temp will drop into the mid-60's, with moderate winds at about 5 mph.
Solid Streak
After failing to reach base in game one against Jacksonville State, Shelbey Miller's streak of 25 consecutive games reaching base came to an end Sunday. The streak is the longest by a Racer this season and will go down as the third longest in program history.
Getting More Aggressive
With eight games left in the regular season, the 61 bases stolen by this year's team is already the most by any squad in the Kara Amundson era. The previous most by an Amundson-led team was 48, which was set last season.
Just Shy
With all four losses for MSU coming by two runs last weekend, 17 of the Racers' 28 total losses this season have now come by two or fewer runs.
