Robinson, Glass Help Racers Cruise Past WKU

A two-hit shutout from Mason Robinson and three-run home run from Maggie Glass helped the Murray State softball team blank Western Kentucky Tuesday, 6-0, at Racer Field in Murray. The win got the Racers off of a five game-schneid and also put an end to a six-game win streak in the all-time series with the Lady Toppers.
While Tuesday was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader, the second game was halted due to lightning in the bottom of the first with MSU leading, 2-0. Due to further weather concerns, the game was eventually canceled and will not be made up.
Things got going for Murray State (19-28) in the second when Jocelynn Rodgers led off the inning with a single, which was followed by a fielder's choice gone awry for WKU to give the Racers two runners on with just one out. After Maddy Feeney stole second in her at bat, Glass made it 3-0 with a long ball the cleared the left center fence for her team-high fourth home run of the season.
Meanwhile, Robinson held WKU (16-25) hitless for five and one-third innings until Bryce Holmgren finally broke up her no-hit bid in the sixth with a single up the middle. Holmgren, however, was quickly erased as Jessica Twaddle turned an unassisted double play in the next at bat to end the inning.
In the bottom of the same inning, Madison Culver made it 5-0 when she sent a ball to the base of the left field fence on a bases-loaded double that scored two. Murray State capped the scoring at six later in the stanza, when Glass scored on a wild pitch by Western Kentucky's Kelsey Jernigan. Â
In the seventh, the Lady Toppers threatened to break up the shutout with two runners on and only one out, thanks to a walk and a second hit by Hannah Parker. However, the seventh ended as quickly as the sixth, as Twaddle turned her second unassisted double play of the contest to end the game and give her team the 6-0 win.
Glass finished the game at 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs and three RBIs, while Jocelynn Rodgers was 2-for-3. Robinson improved to 14-14 on the year with the complete game shutout and allowed no runs on just two hits with five strikeouts and only two walks.
Murray State returns to Racer Field for the final time this weekend for a pivotal three-game OVC series with UT Martin that carries postseason ramifications for both teams. First pitch for both Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
