Brimlett and Lawrence Forge Ahead at OVC Meet

The Murray State women's track and field finished day one of the 2016 Track and Field Championship in Nashville on Friday. The Racers had four athletes qualify for Saturday's finals and had five athletes score for the team. MSU currently sits in ninth place after the first day of competition.Â
After part one of the heptathlon, Jabreuna Brimlett leads the pack with 2231 points. Senior Lauren Miller currently sits in seventh with 1741 points. Brimlett started the day with a second place finish in the 100 meter hurdles (13.91). She followed up her impressive performance by setting a new personal record in the high jump (1.66 meters; 5' 5.25"). A shot put throw of 8.54 meters (28' 0.25") and a personal best in the 200 meter (25.29) capped off Brimlett's first day in the heptathlon.
The freshman's day was not over as she qualified for the finals in the 100 meters hurdles as she ran a 14.15 in the event. Jolyta Henderson finished just outside qualifying for the finals as she finished ninth in the event with a time of 14.85. In the 400 meter hurdles, Jocelyn Payne finished fifth overall in preliminaries to qualify for Saturday as she ran a personal record of 1:02.
Tamdra Lawrence found herself ahead of the pack in the 100 meters. The freshman ran 11.73 in the event to finish first in the preliminaries. Lawrence followed up her first place preliminary finish with another as she ran 24.06 to lead all runners. Anna Curlin also made in to event finals as the sophomore ran 58.14 in the 400 meters.
Rebekah Priddy earned the first points of the meet for the Racers. The sophomore finished in sixth with a time of 11:12 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Chleo LeGrand and Emily Heil also scored for Murray State but in the pole vault. LeGrand and Heil both cleared 3.29 meters (10' 9.5") to place sixth and eighth.
In the final event of the day, Leah Krause led the Racers in the 10,000 meters. Krause finished in seventh place with a time of 37:38. Caroline Grogan followed closely behind as she placed eighth with a time of 37:44. .
Murray State finishes up the at OVC Championship Saturday at the Ed Temple Track on the campus of Tennessee State. Brimlett and Miller look to wrap up the heptathlon starting with the long jump at 9 a.m. Field events start for the Racers for 1 p.m. with the shot put. The team's first track event starts at 2:05 p.m. with the 4x100 meter relay.
