Vallery Korir of the women's track and field team qualified for the NCAA First Round in Jacksonville, Florida as announced on Thursday. Korir will compete in the 10,000 meters race.
Korir broke the school record for the 10k not once but twice this season. In her first collegiate race, she broke the school record that had stood since 1985 by running 35:08 at the Wash U Invite. She finished first in the race and also broke the meet record. Korir again set a person record in the 10k at the Virginia Challenge. She placed fifth at the meet as she ran 34:27.
In her most recent meet, Korir took won the gold medal at the OVC Outdoor Track and Field Championship as she placed first in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:15.
Head coach Jenny Swieton is very happy with Korir's performance this season. "She is very new to the 10k and to see the level of success that she has had so early is very exciting.," said Swieton.  "I can't wait to watch her race on Thursday, she is in a really good place right now and I would not be surprised if she makes it to Eugene. Regardless of how the rest of this season goes, she has a bright future. To get this level of experience as a sophomore will pay dividends in seasons to come."
First rounds of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship for the East region begin May 26 in Jacksonville, Fla. Korir will be competing against 47 other runners, with the top twelve advancing to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
