Korir Carries Confidence To NCAA East Regional

Murray State's Vallery Korir (pronounced career) has a Thursday night date in the 10000-meter run when the NCAA women's track and field team east regional commences in Jacksonville, Florida. The University of North Florida is host.
A sophomore from Iten, Kenya, Korir has enjoyed a tremendous second season with the Racers. She has 14 top-5 finishes in the indoor and outdoor seasons combined in the 10000-meters, 5000-meters, 3000-meters and 1500-meters events.
Korir must finish among the top-12 at Hodges Stadium in a field of 47 runners.Â
This would earn a spot in the NCAA Championships (June 9) in Eugene, Ore.
Korir qualified for the NCAA's after a pair of record-setting performances this spring. On April 1, she broke the 31-year old Murray State mark that had stood since 1985 when Teresa Colby ran a 36:30. Korir's time of 35:08 broke the record by 1:22. On April 22, she broke her own record at the Virginia Challenge with a time of 34:27.
Although she didn't run in the 10000-meter event (May 14) at OVC Outdoor Championship, Korir won the 5000-meter event with a time of 17:15.
