NCAA 10000-Meters Offers Up Learning For Korir

Final Results
Reaching the NCAA women's track and field east regional as a sophomore, Murray State's Vallery Korir (pronounced career) had a learning experience that is sure to help her the next time she lines up with the best runners in the country.
Korir, from Iten, Kenya, placed 45th in the 10,000 meter run in a field of 48 runners on a muggy Thursday night Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. Her time of 37:33 was off her Murray State record time of 34:27 that she posted in Virginia in April.
The learning part of this NCAA experience came after Korir suffered a stumble about halfway through the race. Although she didn't go down, she couldn't recover her rhythm and momentum.
"Val learned a valuable lesson today," said MSU Head Coach Jenny Swieton. "Championship racing is rough and as scrappy as you can imagine, you just have to roll with the punches and give your best. She will be more prepared for this next year, but we have a lot of work to do."
The NCAA 10000-meter event brings to an end an amazing season for Korir. Including the aforementioned MSU record in the 10000-meters, she had 14 top-5 finishes in the indoor and outdoor seasons combined and won the Ohio Valley Conference 5000-meter championship.
