Racers Rally to Win Season Opener

The Murray State volleyball team got off to a sluggish start in 2016, but after a 25-13 loss in the first set, the Racers rattled off three consecutive set victories to defeat Fort Wayne in the season opener, winning the final three sets 25-23, 26-24 and 25-15.
Scottie Ingram led the Racers' offensive attack with 22 kills. Ingram also added 10 digs, a pair of service aces and three total blocks in the win. In her first career match as a Racer, Rachel Giustino had a stellar performance, tallying 15 kills and hitting a match-high .452 while adding a pair of solo blocks.
Kristen Besselsen and Dacia Brown added five kills each on the night. Besselsen had a solid all-around match for MSU as she added 12 digs, five assists and an ace in the win. Courtney Radle led the team with 39 assists in her first match in the blue and gold.
In the back row, Ellie Lorenz registered a team-high 22 digs and had an ace, while freshman Alex Kaufmann chipped in with 13 digs.
Despite getting out-hit by the Mastodons .195 to .142, MSU had a better attack percentage in two of the final three matches. The Racers also had five serving aces and seven errors while Fort Wayne was hurt by its serve game, tallying just one ace and had 12 serving errors.
MSU returns to action Saturday with two matches to close the Fort Wayne Invitational. The Racers will face Ball State at 9 a.m., Murray time in the first match and will close things out against Youngstown State at 3 p.m.
