Racers Win Pair in Five to Win Fort Wayne Invite

The Murray State volleyball team improved its record to 3-0 on the season as the Racers were able to come from behind to prevail in a pair of five-set battles Saturday at the Fort Wayne Invitational. The Racers were able to rally from 2-1 down in both matches to defeat Ball State and Youngstown State.
Set scores against the Cardinals went 25-16, 20-25, 22-25, 25-13 and 15-10. Against YSU, the Racers prevailed 17-25, 25-15, 26-28, 25-19 and 15-8. Scottie Ingram was named the MVP of the invite while Rachel Giustino and Ellie Lorenz joined her on the all-tournament team.
Ingram led the Racers with a career-high 30 kills in the win over BSU while hitting .309. Ingram also added 12 digs and four assists in the opening win. Giustino added 14 kills and hit .375 in the match while Kristen Besselsen added 13 kills and 13 digs. Lorenz added 30 digs to lead the back row while Alex Kaufmann had 19. Courtney Radle tallied 44 assists.
MSU out-hit the Cardinals .257 to .114 in the match and had four service aces to BSU's two.
In the Racers' second thriller of the day, Ingram and Giustino again led the offensive attack, recording 22 and 20 kills, respectively. Giustino also had a monster match at the net defensivley, recording seven total blocks (four solo, three assisted).
Lorenz once again led MSU in digs with 19 in the match while Besselsen had 18 and Ingram recorded her third consecutive double-double to start the season with her 14 digs. Radle again led the way at setter with 42 assists against the Penguins.
The Racers out-hit YSU .181 to .099 but were out-blocked 17 to 10 and had seven fewer service aces.
MSU returns to action in its second tournament of the season next weekend as the Racers travel to the great Northwest for the Oregon Invitational. The Racers play two matches to open the tournament on Sept. 2 as they will face Oregon and UC Davis before closing with a Sept. 3 match against San Diego State.
