Racers Open 2016-17 With Wins Over UT Martin
9/25/2016 6:02:00 PM | Rifle
The second-ranked Murray State rifle team opened its 2016-17 season by taking down both the UT Martin mixed team and the UT Martin women's team Sunday at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray. The Racers won the event with a 4697, while the UT Martin mixed squad shot a 4570 and the Skyhawks' women team turned in a 4499.
"I thought the team worked well through a hot day on the range and all the Family Weekend distractions," said head coach Alan Lollar after the match. "We head a big crowd today and I want to thank all of family, friends and fans that showed up. I really thought we did everything we needed to do in the first match and now we know what we need to work on before Ole Miss. Bobby and Alathea really stepped big for us today and Ivan, Ben and Kenzie were also solid. Meike, Shelby and Eric also showed good things and their hard work is really beginning to pay off."
Junior Ivan Roe led the smallbore for the Racers with a 589, while classmate Ben Estes followed with a 582. Junior Robert Broadstreet and sophomore MacKenzie Martin each turned in a 580 in the event, while sophomore Alathea Sellars rounded out the squaded shooters at 567. Other scores for Murray State in smallbore included freshman Meike Drewell with a 578, freshman Shelby Huber with a 570 and sophomore Eric Sloan with a 567.
In air rifle, Martin paced MSU with a 593, while Estes followed with a career-best 592 and Roe shot a solid 591. Sellars served as the last counter in air rifle for Murray State with a 590, while Broadstreet shot a 576 as the last squaded shooter. The three non-squaded shooters for the Racers also had good performances in the event with Huber finishing at 577, Drewell closely behind at 576 and Sloan firing a 574.
Roe finished the day just five points shy of tying his career best to lead all shooters with an 1180, while Estes was just one off his career best total score at 1174. Martin also had a solid day and finished just five off her career high with an 1173.
The Murray State rifle team will return to action Oct. 7 when it travels to Oxford, Mississippi for the 2016 Ole Miss Open. Â Â
