The Murray State Racers women's soccer team extended their Ohio Valley Conference unbeaten streak to 28-consecutive games, as they defeated Austin Peay 1-0 at Cutchin Field in Murray, Ky.
Murray moves to 10-1-2 overall and 5-0-2 in the OVC while Austin Peay falls to 7-6-3 overall and 2-4-3 in the OVC.
"With where we are in the conference, it's important that we put pressure on the teams playing Friday," said assistant coach Matt Lodge.
With the win, women's soccer is the first team for Murray to beat the Governors this year in the Heritage Bank Battle of the Border. Austin Peay leads the yearlong competition six points to three, as the Governors beat the Racers in football and volleyball.
The Governors and Racers played to a close first half, as the Racers narrowly missed on multiple chances, putting up 10 shots in the half.
Keeping the pressure on the Governors, Murray State put up 13 more shots in the second frame, with the the most important coming at the 79th minute. Emma Heise collected a blocked shot inside the box and found the back of the net for her second goal of the year to put Murray up 1-0.
Alex Steigerwald picked up her 10th win of the year, making four saves against Austin Peay. She now stands with a 10-1-2 overall record in net.
A trip to the Music City is next for the Racers, as they face Belmont on Sunday, October 15 at 2 p.m.
