Tuesday
Murray State hosts the OVC-leading Austin Peay Governors Tuesday night at Racer Arena in a 7 p.m., contest. APSU enters the match as the lone undefeated team in the conference during OVC play at 4-0. The Govs also enter Tuesday riding a 10-match winning streak.
Last Weekend
The Racers faced their first two conference road tests over the weekend with mixed results. MSU opened the weekend winning the first set at UT Martin, before falling in four sets to the Skyhawks. The following afternoon, the Racers rallied to win in four sets at Southeast Missouri. Katirah Johnson had a big match in the win against the Redhawks, notching 12 kills and hitting a match-high .556. Johnson also tied for the team lead with four total blocks in the win.
Scouting Austin Peay
The Governors are led by two of the top players in the OVC in Ashley Slay and Kristen Stucker. Stucker, who was the 2016 OVC Setter of the Year, leads the league in assists per set this season with 11.41 and has helped the Govs to a .220 hitting percentage as a team. Slay, who was a First Team All-OVC selection a season ago, is averaging 3.90 kills per set and is hitting .300. Ginny Gerig leads the back row defensively with 253 digs (4.08). The Governors have 104 service aces so far in 2017 and 129 team blocks.
Battle of the Border
Tuesday will be the first of two matches in 2017-18 in the Heritage Bank Battle of the Border all-sport rivalry contest between the two universities. Last season, the Racers took down Austin Peay to win the inaugural trophy in convincing fashion, 46.5-17.5. Points are awarded per head-to-head win or best conference finish, depending on the sport, in addition to a week of giving and a blood drive. The school with the most points at the end of the season gets to keep the trophy for the next year.
