Murray State's two-set deficit comeback fell short Friday night on the road at SIU Edwardsville as the Racers fell 3-2. Set scores went 22-25, 19-25, 25-16, 25-23 and 13-15.
The Racers (15-8, 7-4 OVC) had their chances in the deciding set, leading late 8-5 before a four-point run by SIUE (19-4, 9-2 OVC) pushed it in the lead for good in the fifth set. MSU was able to tie the set three separate times the rest of the way, but couldn't regain the lead.
MSU out-hit the Cougars .200 to .170 on the night and also out-blocked SIUE (11.5-9) in the loss. The Cougars did notch seven service aces in the match while the Racers had four.
Rachel Holthaus led the way for MSU in the loss as she had a big match, recording a career-best and match-high 21 kills while hitting .396. Holthaus also tabbed her second double-double of the season as she added 10 digs.
Rachel Giustino also had a double-double in the match as she recorded 12 kills and 14 digs. Dacia Brown added nine kills of her own and hit .318 on the night. Callie Anderton netted career-bests in both assists (49) and digs (13) in a losing effort and also led the Racers with two service aces.
Becca Fernandez led MSU with a career-best and match-high 29 digs while Alex Kaufmann added 16 digs in the back row. Giustino, Katirah Johnson and Megan Lindsey each led the way at the net defensively, all tallying five total blocks.
MSU looks to rebound with a quick turnaround Saturday as the Racers will travel to face Eastern Illinois at 2 p.m.
