The Murray State men's basketball team is off and running with official practices since last Friday.
Head coach Matt McMahon takes the Racers into his third season when they open the season at home (Nov. 10) against Brescia at the CFSB Center. MSU has a women's/men's exhibition doubleheader planed against Georgetown College and McKendree on Nov. 2.
The Racers return one of their top scoring duos in program history in All-Ohio Valley Conference selections Jonathan Stark and Terrell Miller, Jr. They combined for 37.9 points per game a year ago and are tracking to become the 43rd and 44th members of the MSU 1000-Point Club this season. Stark enters the season with 723 points, while Miller has 529.
The Racers are coming off a prolific 3-point performance in 2016-17. Their 289 made 3-point baskets and 803 attempts were both team records (289-803 .360) in the 31 seasons since the 3-point shot came into being in the 1986-87 season. The previous mark for made threes of 263 was from the 2014-15 season (263-679 .387). The previous mark for attempts was 701 from the 2012-13 season. MSU hit 8.75 threes per game and bested the mark from the 2012-13 season of 7.83.
MSU was a great free throw team as well last season and set the team record of 73 percent. (552-751 .735).
MSU has a challenging schedule which includes big home games against Middle Tennessee (Nov. 13), Southern Illinois (Nov. 25) and Auburn (Dec. 19). The Racers' non-conference road schedule includes games at Wright State (Nov. 18), Illinois State (Dec. 9) and Saint Louis (Dec. 12). Murray State opens OVC play at home against Eastern Illinois and SIUE on Dec. 28 and 30. When the regular season is finished, the OVC Tournament moves to a new venue, the Ford Center, in Evansville, Indiana (Feb. 28).
While the Racers continue their fall workouts, Racer fans will look forward to meeting both MSU teams (Oct. 19) for Racer Mania at the CFSB Center. The OVC prepares for basketball media day activities in Evansville (Oct. 23) when the OVC Preseason Team and predicted order of finish will be revealed.
