Racers Battle EKU In Showdown Of OVC Undefeated Squads
10/3/2017 9:58:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Murray State is on the road, as they play their only game of the week at Eastern Kentucky on Thursday, October 5 at 3 p.m.
Last Time On Racer Soccer…
On the back of three goals coming within two minutes of each other, the Murray State Racers continued their dominance with a 3-1 victory over the UT Martin Skyhawks at Cutchin Field in Murray, Ky.
Moving Up
The Racers continue to move up the RPI rankings, they now sit at 43.
Top Three
Harriet Withers is third in scoring in the country with 12 goals.
Records Are Meant To Be Broken
Setting new records for game winning goals, career goals, and career point, you'd think there isn't too left for Withers to break. She is now just one goal away from tying the single season record of 13 goals set in 2004.
Shutdown Defense
Alex Steigerwald and the Racer defense have been impressive to say the least. They have allowed just two goals in the last five games. In that span, they had not allowed a goal from the 65th minute in the Saint Louis game on September 17th to the 81st minute against UT Martin. That's 390:00 plus minutes of shutdown defense.
We Run This Conference
You have to look back to the tail end of 2014, the first season under coach Groves, that the Racers lost a regular season OVC Game. That was on October 26 against the Bruins of Belmont, where the Racers fell 2-0. Since then, Murray State has gone on a 26 game and counting conference unbeaten streak.
Final Four
After EKU, the Racers will have four regular season games remaining.
Know Thy Foe(s)
The Colonels of Eastern Kentcky stand first in the OVC with a conference record of 4-0-2, giving them 14 conference points. Overall, the Colonels are 7-3-3. The Racers, with a 4-0-1 conference record, have 13 conference points and are second in the OVC. EKU is coming off back-to-back wins, with a 2-0 victory over EIU and 3-2 over SIUE. Two players are tied with five goals for EKU, with 20 totals goals as a team. Anna Hall has played every game in goal this year, letting up 16 goals and making 44 saves along with four shutouts.
Last Time They Met
The last time these two squads faced off was last year, with the Racers coming away with a 3-0 victory at Cutchin Field.
All Time Record
The Racers come into the match with an overall record of 8-3-2 against EKU, with the last three going Murray's way. At home, Murray is 4-1-0 all-time and on the road is 3-2-2. There has been just one game played between these two on neutral ground, and that was a Racers 1-0 victory in 2009.
Who's Next
Austin Peay comes to Cutchin field on Thursday October 12 as part of the Heritage Bank Battle of the Border, an all-sport rivalry contest between the two universities. Last season, the Racers took down Austin Peay to win the inaugural trophy in convincing fashion, 46.5-17.5. Points are awarded per head-to-head win or best conference finish, depending on the sport, in addition to a week of giving and a blood drive. The school with the most points at the end of the season gets to keep the trophy for the next year.
