The Murray State Racers welcome the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders into the CFSB Center for a 7 p.m. tip Monday in Murray, Ky. The Racers and Blue Raiders were battling members of the Ohio Valley Conference from 1952 to 2000 and meet for the 140th time overall and for the seventh time as non-conference opponents since MT left the OVC. This game also marks the fifth-straight season the two have played. The game was a big clash back in the OVC days and it has stayed that way in recent years.
Froggy 103 (WFGS 103.7 FM) airs every MSU game with "Voice of the Racers" Neal Bradley calling the action in his 26th season. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides commentary. Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com has free online streaming audio. Free online streaming video is available at OVCDigitalNetwork.com.
The Racers are coming off a 118-61 season and home opening win Friday over Brescia. Six Racers scored in double-figures led by Byron Hawkins who had the best debut of any MSU player since 2000 with 28 points. Hawkins, who sat out last season as a transfer from Towson, had an amazing night in going 10-of-13 from the field including 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Terrell Miller had his 13th MSU double-double. Freshman Ja Morant had 11 assists, which was one off the arena record of 12 by Aubrey Reese in 1999.
MSU's 93rd season of collegiate basketball and 20th in the CFSB Center is now underway after the Racers were picked third in Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll (Oct. 24) at media day in Evansville, Ind., site of the 2018 OVC Tournament at the Ford Center. Terrell Miller, Jr., and Jonathan Stark were named to the All-OVC Preseason Team and Stark became the 10th Racer in the last 24 seasons to be named OVC Preseason Player of the Year. Stark led the OVC in scoring a year ago and has also been named to the Lou Henson Award watch list which goes to the top mid-major player as named by CollegeInsider.com.
The Racers received some good news last week when Basketball Times magazine again named the Murray State Racers among the top men's programs in NCAA D-I. Since 1997, Basketball Times has revealed it's list every five years. Murray State is among what the publication calls the "Fine Nine", a list of schools that has qualified for the list since the project started 20 years ago. The list (alphabetically) includes: Arizona, Connecticut, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Murray State, North Carolina, Syracuse and Xavier. The Racers are No. 32 in the ratings.
The Racers hit the road for the first time Saturday when they travel to Dayton, Ohio to take on the Wright State Raiders in a 6 p.m. CT tip. MSU is back at The Bank (Nov. 25) to face the Southern Illinois Salukis.Â
