The Murray State Racers play game two of a three-game home stand Tuesday when they welcome in the Harris-Stowe State Hornets to the CFSB Center for a 7 p.m. game.
Froggy 103 (WFGS 103.7 FM) airs every MSU game with "Voice of the Racers" Neal Bradley calling the action in his 26th season. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides commentary. The Racers are coming off an 81-73 home win over Southern Illinois Saturday night when they erased a six-point halftime deficit to win by eight after they put together a 50-point second half. Jonathan Stark, the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Player of the Year, scored a game-high 27 points on 5-of-10 3-point shooting and his three 3-pointers late in the game helped the Racers to hold off the Salukis.
MSU has back-to-back wins heading into the HSSU game and if they can win, they'll match the longest win streak that last season produced, three in a row, done twice in the season.
In the first three NCAA D-I games of the season, the Racers have shown some badly needed and impressive trends on defense. The Racers have held Middle Tennessee, Wright State and SIU to 43 percent shooting and have limited them to 25 percent from the 3-point line on 12-of-49 shots. Counting the opener against Brescia, the Racers are first in the OVC in holding opponents to only 24 percent from 3-point range (18-of-74). Last season, the Racers were eighth in the league in giving up 36 percent from long range, so the early improvement is duly noted. If the Racers can continue to show improvement on defense and in the rebounding area, they will do well this season.
This week the Racers play a pair of games at home with Harris-Stowe and then Florida A&M on Saturday. MSU is hosting a HSSU team that is 3-4 in the early going and 1-1 in their classification of NAIA and the American Midwest Conference. The Hornets have four players that score in double-figures with leader Deandre Clark scoring 13.9 points per game. He is also the team's leading rebounder as he gets 6.3 per game. Dwane Miner scores 11.3 points per game and is the best 3-point shooter HSSU has at 47 percent on 14-of-30.
Tuesday's game marks the third time the Racers and Hornets have meet with Murray State claiming home wins in 2011 and 2015.
When the Racers get to the Saturday game with FAMU, they'll be meeting the Rattlers for the first time since 1988.
Looking past this week, the Racers will have a pair of challenging road games to face. At Illinois State (Dec. 9) and at Saint Louis (Dec. 12). In December, the Racers will be at home for five of their eight games.
