The Murray State Racers carry a five-game winning streak into a Tuesday game with the Saint Louis Billikens. Tip time is 7 p.m. at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis, Missouri.
Froggy 103 (WFGS 103.7 FM) airs every MSU game with "Voice of the Racers" Neal Bradley calling the action in his 26th season. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides commentary. Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com has free online streaming audio. Fox Sports Midwest television has the game and streaming video is available at Atlantic10.com.
Since a 72-67 loss (Nov. 13) at home to highly regarded Middle Tennessee, the Racers have run off five-straight wins including games at Wright State (Nov. 18) and home against Southern Illinois (Nov. 25). Saturday, the Racers took the lead for good at Illinois State with 6:45 remaining in the first half, led by as many as 13, and held off a Redbird rally that got as close as two points before taking the win 78-72. Terrell Miller led the Racers with 25 points, he leads the team in scoring with 17.3 points per game and 8.0 rebounds. Freshman Ja Morant had an impressive line of 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Shaq Buchanan added 16 points and Jonathan Stark scored 13.
Off to their best start in the Coach Matt McMahon era, the Racers also have their best start since the 2012-13 season when they were 9-1. Picked third in the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll, the Racers knew they had solid performers in Miller and Stark as they formed the second returning scoring duo in NCAA D-I. Â Each were named to the OVC Preseason Team and Stark was the OVC Preseason Player of the Year. What the Racers have done is add some excellent pieces and it shows in their improved offensive balance and defensive abilities.
The Racers and Billikens have met only seven times and not since 1999. Saint Louis has won all seven meetings including the last game at Kiel Center (now Scottrade Center) on Feb. 8, 1999 (62-51) which was at the time a 20-win Racer team under Coach Tevester Anderson. SLU head coach Travis Ford is very familiar with the Racers having coached against them when he started his career at NAIA Campbellsville University, Eastern Kentucky in the OVC and once when he coached Oklahoma State. In all, he has met the Racers 12 times and has a 4-8 record. Ford, is a native of Madisonville, Kentucky and his father Eddie played for the Racers under Coach Cal Luther from 1964-66.
After the SLU game, the Racers return home to the CFSB Center to host Marist (Dec. 16) and Auburn (Dec. 19), before visiting Detroit Mercy (Dec. 22). Â OVC play will begin three days after Christmas when Eastern Illinois and SIUE visit MSU on Dec. 28 and 30.
