The Murray State women open their 2017-18 conference schedule Thursday when Eastern Illinois comes to the CFSB Center for a 5 p.m. contest. Thursday's game will be a doubleheader along with the MSU men's squad.
The Racers closed their non-conference slate December 20 at Alabama. In the 68-47 loss to the Crimson Tide, MSU scored a season-low in points, as well as made a season-low two 3-pointers. Jasmine Borders was the high scorer for the Racers in the loss with 13 points. For her efforts against the Tide and Dec. 18 against Mississippi Valley State, Borders was named College Sports Madness' OVC Player of the Week as she averaged 16 points over the two games. Borders had a career-best 19 in the win over the Devilettes.
Senior Grace Lennox, who is averaging 15.4 points and 4.9 assists per game leads the Panthers and is the only Panther averaging in double figures this season. Jennifer Nehls is second on Eastern Illinois averaging 7.7 points per game and is one of three Panthers that have started in all 11 games. Jalisha Smith leads EIU in rebounding at 4.8 per game off the bench. As a team, EIU is averaging 59.5 points per game and is allowing 74.7 per. The Panthers enter the OVC opener on a nine-game losing streak.
MSU is 19-20 all-time in OVC openers, including a 13-7 mark at home. The Racers have won each of their last two conference openers. This will be the first time that the Racers will meet EIU in a conference-opener.
