With a final score of 4690, the Murray State rifle team won its 12th OVC Championship, and second in a row, Sunday at the 2016 OVC Rifle Championships at the Button Rifle Range in Morehead, Kentucky. In addition, to the team title, the Racers took home at least a share of each of the four major awards and nine of a possible 10 all-conference honors.
"We want to congratulate Morehead State and Coach Joseph on a good championship," said head coach Alan Lollar after the match. "They really worked hard to make it good for everyone. Our smallbore was a little down yesterday, we had some good groups that were just a little wide. We worked hard for every shot, so the effort was good and that's what we judge ourselves on. Today, our air rifle was consistent as usual. Everyone worked hard and it was a complete team effort. Overall, it was a good weekend to start building on. We are always looking to get better and we will take lessons learned from this match and apply them to training for the next match."
Sophomore Alathea Sellars and junior Ivan Roe turned in the day's high score in the air rifle event at 594, just one day after Roe led all shooters in smallbore as well. Sophomore MacKenzie Martin kept pace with Sellars and Roe at 592, while sophomore Barbara Schläpfer followed at 591. Junior Robert Broadstreet rounded out the squaded shooters for MSU at 587.
The Racers finished the air rifle portion of the championships with a 2371 to give them an overall score of 4690, when paired with their smallbore effort of 2319 from Saturday. Roe also led all shooters in aggregate score on the weekend at 1181.
After the event, Roe was named as OVC Smallbore Athlete of the Year, while Sellars was named as OVC Air Rifle Athlete of the Year. In addition, Meike Drewell, along with Kaitlin Korinek of UT Martin, was tabbed as the OVC Co-Freshman of the Year and Lollar was named as the OVC Coach of the Year for the fifth time.
In All-OVC honors, Roe, Broadstreet and junior Ben Estes earned first-team honors in smallbore, while Roe, Sellars, Martin and Schläpfer were named to the air rifle first team. Martin also took home second-team honors in smallbore, while Broadstreet notched a second-team air rifle nod.
"I am very proud of all of our award winners," said Lollar. "I am also proud of Ivan. He had a great weekend that continues his consistency and I can't say enough about his work ethic and drive to be the best."
The Racers return to action next Sunday at the University of Kentucky Rifle Range in Lexington, Kentucky where they will go shoulder-to-shoulder with West Virginia in a battle of the nation's second and third-ranked teams.
