This Weekend's Games
The Murray State softball team will look to put an end to a three-game skid this weekend when it travels to OVC rivals UT Martin and Southeast Missouri. The games are the last of a seven-game road swing for the Racers.
Last Time Out
Murray State dropped both games of a doubleheader Saturday at Jacksonville State, 7-3 and 10-6. Despite outhitting the Gamecocks in the doubleheader, 19-18, the Racers had trouble plating runs in the contest, stranding 20 runs over the two-game span. Madison Culver went 3-for-5 on the day to lead MSU with three RBIs, a run and a home run, while Jessica Twaddle followed at 3-for-7 with three RBIs, a walk, a run, a double and a home run.
The UT Martin Series
Prior to MSU head coach Kara Amundson's arrival in 2013, the Skyhawks held a commanding 9-3 lead in the series. However, since 2013, the Racers have won nine of 13 meetings and now trail the series by just one game at 13-12.0. The Racers have won six games in a row in the series and have won five straight at Bettye Giles Field in Martin.
Scouting The Skyhawks
The Skyhawks took a step back this week when they were swept by Memphis in a home doubleheader, 5-4 and 6-2, dropping their overall record to 25-11 to go along with a 4-2 record in the OVC. Carly Gonzales currently powers UTM's .319 team average with a team-high .377 clip at the plate. Jodie Duncan and Savannah Dodson currently follow Gonzales at .369 and .360, respectively. In the circle, the Skyhawk pitching staff has a 3.14 team ERA and is led by Brooke Kennedy's 12-3 record and 2.89 ERA.
The SEMO Series
Murray State dropped its first series against the Redhawks since 2011 last season and now leads the all-time series, 13-7. Last season's three-game set was also a milestone in the overall series that saw each team record its biggest win. The Redhawks netted a 9-1 win over MSU on Saturday, followed by a 16-5 Racer victory on Sunday. After last year's 2-1 series win in Cape Girardeau, SEMO will enter the weekend leading the series at the Southeast Softball Complex, 5-4.
Scouting The Redhawks
SEMO will enter the weekend with a 15-16 overall record and a 0-6 mark in league play. The Redhawks are currently batting .299, while allowing opponents to hit .273 and score 3.38 earned runs per game. At the plate, Rachel Anderson leads the way with a .438 average to go along with team-highs of 23 runs, 42 hits, seven triple, four home runs and 21 RBIs. In the circle, Madeline Krumrey has served as the ace with a record of 9-5, a 2.29 ERA, 62 strikeouts and 26 walks.
Weather Forecast
The high Saturday in Martin is forecasted to be 70 with just a five percent chance of rain. On Sunday in Cape Girardeau, the high will be 76 with chances of precipitation low at nine percent.
