Lawrence Dominates 100 & 200 Qualifying At OVC
5/12/2017 9:05:00 PM | Women's Track and Field
Day two of the OVC Outdoor Track & Field Championship saw several Racers advance to the finals at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama.
After winning the 100 and 200 meter events last year as a freshman, Tamdra Lawrence is back and better than ever after she posted the top qualifying times in each event. Jocelyn
Payne and Norma Abdur-Rafia each had the third-fastest qualifying times in the 400 meter hurdles and 400 meter run. Additionally, Brimlett was the third qualifier in the 100 meter hurdles.
The Racers also saw their best Heptathlon finishes in school history when Jabreuna Brimlett and Taylor McCammon placed second and third.
Murray State Head Coach Jenny Swieton stated that she and the team are excited about what the Racers might be able to produce on the final day.
"I am very proud of the way we finished today," she said. "Everyone went out and fought for everything they could get. It didn't matter if it was a place at the podium, a spot for scoring points for the team, or a place in the finals. We had a ton of PRs today and some truly great performances. I'm excited about where we are as a team heading into the final day."
The Racers enter the final day of competition in fifth place in the field of eight teams. Murray State has 28.5 points, while leader Eastern Illinois has 59 points.
Here is the scoop on how day two at the OVC Championship went for the Racers.
Sprints
After winning the OVC 100 meter dash as a freshman in 2016, MSU's Tamdra Lawrence had the best time in today's qualifying at 11.71. She'll be looking to win on Saturday in back-to-back seasons and just maybe top the 11.54 she had (April 28) at Memphis. Can the speedy Lawrence make it a sweep of the 100 and 200 like she did in 2016 as a freshman? Lawrence also posted the top qualifying time in the 200 meters with a time of 23.68. Her time lowered her third-fastest in MSU history as she bested the 23.87 she had at Ole Miss (March 24).
Brimlett and McCammon each qualified for the finals of the 100 meter hurdles with times of 13.86 and 14.43. Brimlett was third fastest, while McCammon was the last runner to get to the finals with a spot in eighth place.
Middle Distance
MSU's Norma Abdur-Rafia will be in a good spot to claim the 400 meter title Saturday after she had the third-fastest time in the prelims with a 55.53. She's the only Racer to make
the finals.
Jocelyn Payne advanced to the 400 meter hurdles finals with a time of 1:01.58 which was the third-best time. Payne's time was a new PR besting the 1:01.96 she ran (April 7) at the WKU Relays.
Hilary McAdam made great strides in her first season at Murray State, however the 800 meter qualifier turned out to be a heartbreaker when the freshman from Australia had a time of 2:14.20, but fell short of the eighth-place spot won by Madison Zeitz of Eastern Kentucky at 2:13.95. Tia Weston was 12th with a time of 2:16.88.
Distance
The Racers had a trio of runners performed well in the 3000 meter Steeplechase as they placed sixth through eighth place. Rebekah Priddy had a time of 11:10.33 for a spot in sixth place with a time that was inside eight seconds from her 2016 performance, which is third all-time at MSU. Freshman Mason Swenson was seventh at 11:18.54 and Ali Hester was ninth at 11:27.93. The event was moved from an evening 6:50 p.m. to 10:30 a.m. to beat expected afternoon rain.

Brimlett and McCammon got some rest after the Heptathlon and kept their busy day going with the long jump competition. Brimlett placed sixth with a leap of 19-feet 1.25-inches, while McCammon was seventh at 18-feet 7.25-inches. Tennessee State's Amber Hughes was the champion at 20-feet 8.50-inches.
Chleo LeGrand led the way for the Racers with a sixth place showing in the pole vault with a jump of 10-feet 8.25-inches, while Yasmine Homa placed eighth at 10-feet 2.5-inches. The OVC champion was Austin Peay's Savannah Amato at 12-feet 8-inches.
Hope Tewes was MSU's top finisher in the high jump with an effort of 5-feet 1-inch for a spot in 13th place. Haleigh Knapp of Eastern Illinois was the OVC champion at 5-feet 9.25-inches.
Heptathlon
Jabreuna Brimlett sat on the lead of the Heptathlon overnight, and ended up placing second with 4,932 points, just behind SIUE's Lauren White who had 5,001 points. It all came down to the 800 meters, where Brimlett ran a 2:33.68 to place third, but it wasn't enough to overtake White. MSU's Taylor McCammon also had a great Heptathlon and placed third with 4,629 points. The Racer duo were trying to become the first in school history to claim the OVC title. Brimlett becomes the new all-time points leader in the Heptathlon with 4,932 points as she topped the 4,663 points LaShea Shaw produced in 2015.
