Racers Compete At EIU Opener
9/1/2017 9:39:00 PM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
The Murray State Cross Country squad began their year with impressive results from both the men and women at the EIU Walt Crawford Open at the Woodfall Panther Trail to kick-off the 2017 season.
This was a double dual meet that saw schools such as EIU, Illinois, Southeast Missouri, Murray State, and SIUE. Schools that also sent runners included Vincennes University, Danville Area CC, Illinois Central College, Lincoln College and Kaskaskia College.
Senior Meagan Smith came away with the best results for either squad, finishing fourth overall with a time of 18:18.98.
Joining Smith in the top 25 for the women was Junior Rebekah Priddy, who finished 18th with a time of 18:52.30 and Freshman Riley McMahon, who placed 25th with a time of 19:07.64.
Senior Mark Ventura was the top finisher for the Racers for the men, coming in at 11th with a time of 25:58.42. Junior Vince Turner was the other member of the men's squad to crack the top-25, finishing 23rd with a time of 26:39.87.
"Both the men and women raced well. I was proud of how they competed in the last half of their races. Meagan had a great opening race that should leave here feeling confident throughout the season. Mark is starting his season where he left off in 2016 and is excited to get more chances to race to continue to show he is one of the better runners in the OVC." Said assistant coach Adam Kiesler when asked about the race and his leading seniors.
The next competition for the Racers is out at Southern Indiana on Sep 16.
