The Murray State Racers (7-1-1, 2-0-1) won their second OVC game of the year in commanding fashion over Jacksonville State (3-6-2, 0-3-0) 3-0 at the JSU Soccer Complex in Jacksonville, Alabama.
"For 80 minutes, I thought we played great. It's always hard to ask that with the amount of traveling we've done in the last couple days, and playing a team that's been off for a week," said head coach Jeremy Groves after the win.
Just four minutes into the first half, the Racers came firing out of the gates for their first goal, as Rebecca Kubin fired in her fourth of the year to make it a 1-0 game. Harriet Withers added to the scoring at the eight minute mark, collecting her ninth goal of the season. Miyah Watford recorded her second goal as a Racers three minutes into the second frame to give the Racers their 3-0 lead.
"We talked about coming out to a fast start today. We went back to work with our forwards after Thursday and it showed today," commented Groves.
In the first half, Murray State limited the Gamecocks to just one shot on net, while the Racers put five of eight shots on net in the first frame. In total, the Racers came away with 17 total shots and nine on goal.
Alex Steigerwald earned her seventh win of the year as she made four saves. The match marked Steigerwald's fourth clean sheet of the season, including back-to-back shutouts in the last two matches.
Withers is now tied with Theresa Reedy for the all-time goal record of 34. Reedy set the record when she played from 2001-04. Collecting a goal and assist against JSU, Withers is now the all-time Racer point leader with 82. Reedy was the previous record holder with 81 career points at Murray State.
After playing the majority of their games on the road, The Racers return home for the next two games when Southeast Missouri comes to Cutchin Field on Thursday, September 28 at 3 p.m., followed by UT Martin rounds out the week on Sunday, October 1 at 3 p.m.
