Racers Host SEMO & UT Martin This Week
9/25/2017 1:33:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Murray State returns to Cutchin field for a pair of games against Southeast Missouri and UT Martin this Thursday, September 28 at 3 p.m. and Sunday, October 1 at 3 p.m.
Last Time On Racer Soccer…
The Murray State Racers (7-1-1, 2-0-1) won their second OVC game of the year in commanding fashion over JSU (3-6-2, 0-3-0) 3-0 at the JSU Soccer Complex in Jacksonville, Alabama.
Moving Up
The Racers have moved up the RPI rankings once again, they now sit at 54.
Records Are Meant To Be Broken
Harriet Withers is now just a goal away from setting a new all-time high for career goals as a Racers. Withers is currently tied for the record with 34 goals after scoring her ninth of the year against JSU. Along with the all-time goal total, Withers has been chasing the all-time point record as well. With a goal and assist against JSU, Withers now stands as the new leader in points with 82.
Alex Steigerwald has quietly been moving up the leader board this season. She is now second in Racers history in shutouts (15) and in wins (25). She has also moved into fourth for the most matches played in goal by a Racer (37).
We Run This Conference
You have to look back to the tail end of 2014, the first season under coach Groves, that the Racers lost a regular season OVC Game. That was on October 26 against the Bruins of Belmont, where the Racers fell 2-0. Since then, Murray State has gone on a 24 game and counting conference unbeaten streak.
The Steiger"wall"
Steigerwald came up with two shutouts the past week, a 0-0 double overtime draw with Tennessee Tech and the 3-0 win against Jacksonville State. She has had shutouts in three of the last four games, only allowing one goal while making 17 saves.
Back-To-Back-To-Back?
A shutout against SEMO will give Steigerwald her third shutout in a row a feat that's occurred for the Racers since 2014. The '14 and '15 season both saw one stretch of three shutouts in a row, while the '16 season saw two separate streaks. In fact, if it wasn't for a 1-1 double overtime tie at SIUE, Murray State would've had seven consecutive games not allowing a goal to end the year. The only time the Racers have had four consecutive game not allowing goal came in 2009 where they went 3-0-1.
Coming From All Angles
Three Racers found the back of the net last Sunday, With Rebecca Kubin, Withers and Miyah Watford contributing to the win. Scoring this year for Murray State have been Withers (9), Kubin (4), Watford (2), Kayla Travis (1) and Aaron Lankster (1) resulting in 17 goals this season.
Know Thy Foe(s)
The Redhawks of Southeast Missouri come to Cutchin Field to kick off the first of two home games this week. SEMO is coming off of back-to-back 1-1 double overtime ties against Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky. Coming into the match, the Redhawks are 4-5-2 overall and 1-1-2 in the OVC. In their 11 games this year, SEMO sees three players tied with two goals for the lead. They have scored 11 while letting up 10. The Redhawks have played two keepers, with Kindra Lierz playing the majority of the action, allowing nine goals while making 34 saves and one shutout.
UT Martin comes to Murray on Sunday to begin the month of October. The Skyhawks have lost their last two matches, with a 1-0 defeat to EKU while losing to Morehead 4-2. Coming into the match, the Skyhawks are 4-7-2 overall and 2-2-0 on the OVC. They are led by Danae Kaldaridou with four goals and four assists. Two players have three goals for UT Martin as well. 17 goals have been scored by the Skyhawks while they've let up 21. Erica Myers has played in 12 games this season, allowing 18 goals and making 55 saves.
Last Time They Met
SEMO tied the Racers last season in a 2-2 double OT match in Southeast Missouri the last time these two teams met.
Murray defeated UT Martin in Martin last year 2-1 the last time they faced off.
All Time Record
Overall, the Racers are 8-11-1 against the Redhawks, with the last three meetings resulting in points for Murray State. Prior to the recent stretch from the Racers, SEMO won from 2010-14, resulting in five consecutive wins.
Against UT Martin, Murray State is 12-4-2 overall, with the Racers winning the last three games against the Skyhawks.
